9:30 AM - 12:30 PM EST

Recreating The Culture In The Sex Therapy Room: The Power Of Culture! - A Cultural Competence Workshop

This presentation proposes an innovative paradigm shift in sex therapy by emphasizing the essential role of culture in understanding and treating sexual dysfunction. Traditionally, therapy has focused primarily on symptom relief rather than exploring the deeper, subjective, and culturally influenced meanings clients attach to sexuality. Culture, often viewed as a barrier, should instead be seen as a potential resource for healing. Through a tripartite model the presentation highlights how therapists can help clients explore the influence of their cultural systems, find personal meaning in their experiences, and reconstruct empowering narratives about their sexuality.

The presentation is structured around a detailed case vignette and how therapists can guide patients through the tripodal model. The presentation concludes that culture should not be dismissed as a source of dysfunction but integrated as a strength within therapy. This culturally inclusive model encourages clinicians to treat patients holistically, addressing biological, psychological, and social dimensions to foster authentic, long-term well-being rather than temporary symptom relief.

(Trainer - Sarah Lebovits, LCSW, is a psychotherapist and educator specializing in intimacy, sexual health, and relationship dynamics. She teaches psychology and social work at Yeshiva University and the University of Mount Saint Vincent. Sarah focuses on the intersectionality of culture, religion, and sexuality, integrating EMDR, DBT, and motivational interviewing to address desire discrepancies, sexual anxiety, and trauma. Guided by her belief that life is not about surviving but about thriving, she fosters open, culturally sensitive conversations that empower clients toward healing and growth.)

Parent Training for Child Behavior Management

Disruptive behavior disorders are among the most common reasons children are referred to mental health services, with Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder affecting an estimated 2–16% of youth. Decades of research demonstrate that Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) is one of the most effective interventions for reducing externalizing behaviors and improving parent-child interactions . This presentation will provide an overview of the core components shared across empirically supported parent training models—including Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and Parent Management Training (PMT) and review the research identifying which treatment elements produce the strongest outcomes, such as increasing positive parent-child interactions, teaching effective time-out procedures, promoting consistency, and requiring in-session practice.

Participants will gain practical knowledge of how to implement key interventions, including PRIDE skills, differential attention, effective commands, token economies, hands-off time-out procedures, attending and ignoring strategies, and structured reprimands. The workshop will also address clinical decision-making-when PCIT is indicated, when it may not be appropriate, and how PMT adaptations can provide safer and more effective alternatives . Emphasis will be placed on functional analysis, coaching parents toward skill mastery, preventing coercive cycles, and tailoring interventions to child temperament, developmental level, and family context. Attendees will leave with concrete tools to enhance treatment outcomes and increase parent confidence and self-efficacy.

(Trainer - Dr. Aryeh Berlin is a New Jersey and New York licensed clinical psychologist and founder of Aspire Psychological. He specializes in evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, OCD, trauma, ADHD, depression, and school-related challenges. Dr. Berlin has extensive training in residential, community mental health, hospital, and trauma settings. He is an active member of leading professional psychological organizations and is committed to collaborative, research-informed care.)
