Class 1

9:30 AM - 11:30 PM EST

Disconnected Connections: Digital Coping, Doomscrolling, and Our Need for Belonging

Participants will explore how attachment theory, polyvagal/social engagement theory, and relational safety shape emotional well‑being; review the paradox of being “hyperconnected but lonely”; review key findings from the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 Advisory on Loneliness; identify common digital coping behaviors, explore how dopamine‑driven reward loops, habit‑formation models (BJ Fogg), and relational‑technology dynamics (Sherry Turkle) contribute to digital overuse; identify the mechanisms, risks, and psychological drivers of doomscrolling, including algorithmic amplification and negativity bias; explore how to use validated tools (e.g., Digital Well‑Being Scale, UCLA Loneliness Scale) to evaluate digital habits; and develop personalized or organizational digital‑well‑being plans using cognitive‑behavioral techniques, mindfulness/somatic practices, intentional digital structure, and relational strategies that strengthen connection and resilience. Participants will also engage in a reflection exercise and a small group activity to discuss challenges and barriers existing in practice.

(Trainer - Nadine earned her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000. Contraception & STIs: What Every Sex Therapist Should Know

Sex therapists routinely encounter clients navigating decisions about contraception, safer sex practices, and sexual health concerns—yet formal training in these areas is often limited. This three-hour presentation equips graduate sex therapy students with a practical, clinician-informed understanding of modern contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted infections, and the ways these topics intersect with the psychological and relational dimensions of sexual health. From hormonal and long-acting reversible contraceptives to barrier methods and emerging prevention strategies like PrEP, participants will gain the foundational medical literacy needed to support informed client conversations and recognize when referral to a medical provider is warranted. Beyond the clinical basics, this course explores how contraception and STI concerns shape sexual desire, pleasure, body image, relationship dynamics, and communication between partners—including the impact of contraceptive side effects on sexual function, the emotional consequences of STI diagnosis and disclosure, stigma reduction, and culturally sensitive approaches to discussing sexual health across diverse populations. Participants will leave with a framework for integrating medical knowledge into sex therapy practice, bridging the gap between the exam room and the therapy room.

(Trainer - Dr. Kris Christiansen is a board-certified family physician who specializes in sexual medicine. She attended medical school and completed her residency in family medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School. After practicing full-spectrum family medicine for 10 years, she was drawn to the field of sexual medicine and pursued additional training to provide the care for her patients that is so difficult to find. She is passionate about working with individuals and couples and restoring an important part of their lives.

Dr. Christiansen practices at two different sexual medicine clinics in St. Louis Park and St. Paul, MN. In her practice, she works with both men and women. She has presented at several local, state, and national medical conferences on a variety of medical topics related to sexual problems.  She is involved with the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health and serves on the board, committees, has collaborated with other experts to publish journal articles, and edits informational articles for the society’s patient-facing website. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, and exploring the outdoors.)
