The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act Training - Day 2

This 8-hour continuing education course is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the essential knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to diagnose and treat Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) effectively. The course aligns with the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Medication-Assisted Treatment Education (MATE) program requirements. It focuses on key areas critical to providing culturally competent, evidence-based care.

Day 2 centers on effective treatment planning, emphasizing patient-centered care, evidence-based communication strategies, and the impact of stigma, trauma, and social determinants of health on SUDs and recovery. Participants will discover the value of collaborative care, navigating legal and ethical considerations. The course concludes with a comprehensive exploration of pain management and substance misuse, covering assessment, treatment planning, and opioid management, with a focus on recognizing signs of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in patients on prescribed opioids.

This course is designed to measure changes in learner competence, performance, and, ultimately, patient and community health. Through scenario-based assessments, case studies, and post-course evaluations, participants will understand SUDs deeply and acquire practical skills to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care while adhering to risk evaluation and mitigation strategies.
By the end of the course, healthcare professionals will be better prepared to prevent, recognize, and care for individuals with SUDs, including those with concurrent pain and psychiatric and medical co-morbidities. This training will empower participants to positively impact patient outcomes and contribute to the well-being of the communities they serve.

About the Presenter

Trainer, Dr. Tamara I. Thorn is a Certified Physician Assistant and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. She holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Psychiatry, is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW, DCSW, BCD), and substance abuse counselor (CAADC, MATS). Dr. Thorn has more than twenty years of experience in the health and mental health professions. Dr. Thorn is the owner and director of ACES (Assessment, Continuing Education, Clinical Supervision). Dr. Thorn also holds membership in many professional and community services organizations, such as The Links, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The Rotary Club, and The Junior League-Savannah.

Day 1: Understanding Substance Use Disorders and Assessment

Introduction to Substance Use Disorders (SUDs)

  • Overview of SUDs and their impact on individuals and communities
  • Recognizing the importance of culturally competent care and collaboration
  • Screening and Assessment
  • Use of validated screening tools for SUD and risk factors, including mental disorders
  • Techniques for assessing individuals who screen positive for SUDs.

Co-Occurring Disorders

  • Understanding the relationship between SUDs and mental health issues

Strategies for diagnosing and managing co-occurring disorders.

  • Medications for SUDs
  • Initiation and management of FDA-approved medications for SUDs (opioids, alcohol, and tobacco)
  • Consideration of Individual physiology and Metabolism on medication pharmacodynamics

Day 2: Effective Treatment Planning and Ethical Considerations

Patient-Centered Care

  • Patient-centered decision-making and paradigms of care
  • Evidence-based communication strategies, including shared decision-making and motivational interviewing.

Addressing Stigma and Trauma

  • Understanding the impact of stigma, trauma, and social determinants of health on substance use and recovery.
  • Strategies for creating a trauma-informed care environment.

Collaborative Care

  • Collaborating with other disciplines to facilitate access to medications and referrals to services, such as case management,.
  • Legal and ethical issues in the care of patients with SUDs

Pain Management and Substance Misuse

  • Assessing patients with acute, subacute, or chronic pain
  • Developing effective treatment plans for pain, including nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions
  • Managing patients on opioid analgesics, including tapering when necessary
  • Recognizing signs of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in patients on prescribed opioids
